In 1911 Turlock introduced the Melon Carnival as a way to showcase and celebrate the abundance of agricultural gold being harvested right here in the Central Valley. Our iconic Downtown Turlock hosted this event which included a Kiddie Caper Parade, Live Music, Carnival Row, Melon Queen Pageant, Melon Rolling Competition, and many other fun community contests. A second carnival was held in 1912, and in the ensuing years, it was held intermittently until 1925.
Turlock has been without an annual festival for quite some time now. Considering Turlock's history of melon cultivation, reviving the original 1911 Turlock Melon Carnival seemed ideal. Similar events attract more than 30,000 attendees. The idea gained traction, and after presenting it to the public, the Melon Carnival has received positive and enthusiastic feedback from the community.
