A Leadership & Community Ambassador Program

The Turlock Melon Carnival Pageant is more than a traditional pageant; it is a leadership and community-focused program designed to helping participants grow in confidence, public speaking, and civic engagement while representing the spirit of Turlock.

Participants will take part in community events, mentorship, and stage preparation leading up to the Turlock Melon Carnival on September 19th & 20th, where theĀ Melon Queen and her court will be selected.

Please review our Rules, Expectations, and Waivers Page HERE

🌟 What This Program Represents

Our goal is to create a program that is:

• Inclusive and welcoming to all participants
• Focused on confidence, growth, and leadership
• Rooted in community pride and service
• Supportive and encouraging; not competitive or elitist

We are looking for participants who are excited to grow, engage with their community, and represent Turlock with positivity and pride.

šŸ“… Program Commitment & Expectations

Participation in the Turlock Melon Carnival Pageant requires a commitment to the full experience, including the following components:

šŸ¤ Community Events (July–September)

Participants will attend several events where they will interact with the community and build confidence.

Events may include:

• Community Tea & Public Speaking Events
• Talent & Personality Showcase
• Participation in the Turlock Fourth of July Parade

These events are an important part of the pageant, as judges may be present to observe contestants in natural, real-world settings. Judging happens throughout the program, not just at the Pageant showcase on September 19, 2026.

šŸ›ļø Civic Engagement Requirement

As part of our focus on leadership and community involvement, contestants are required to participate in local civic engagement activities.

Each contestant must:

• Attend two (2) Turlock City Council Meetings: August 25, 2026 @6pm & September 8, 2026 @6pm.
• Participate in one (1) public comment opportunity

During public comment, contestants may choose to:

• Share a community concern or issue
• Highlight something the City of Turlock is doing well
• Provide input on a City Council agenda item

Purpose

This experience is designed to:

• Build understanding of local government and civic processes
• Encourage thoughtful community awareness
• Develop confidence in public speaking
• Empower contestants to use their voice in a meaningful way

Guidance and support will be provided to help each participant feel prepared and confident.

šŸŽ Weekly Practices (Starting in July)

Participants must attend scheduled rehearsals, which will increase in frequency as the pageant approaches in September.

Practices will include:

• Pageant walk and stage presence
• Poise and posture
• Interview preparation
• Leadership and civic engagement discussions
• Learning an opening dance number
• Possible age-group dance performances

All practices are closed, supportive environments designed to help participants grow in confidence.

šŸ’¬ Judging Process

The Turlock Melon Carnival Pageant is designed so judges can get to know contestants over time; not just on pageant day.

Judging is based on:

• Participation and engagement in community & civic events
• Communication skills and confidence
• Leadership potential and personality
• Stage presence and poise
• Interview responses

By pageant day, judges will already have a strong understanding of each contestant’s character and potential.

šŸ‘‘ Pageant Day (September 19, 2026)

The Turlock Melon Carnival Pageant will take place on opening night of theĀ Turlock Melon Carnival.

Participants will:

• Perform in an opening dance number
• Participate in stage presentations
• Answer interview or on-stage questions
• Present in formal attire

Note: Dance performances are for entertainment and celebration and are not part of judging.

šŸŽ‰ Expectations of Selected Court Members

Participants selected as the Melon Queen and Court will serve as ambassadors for Turlock throughout their reign.

Responsibilities include:

• Participation in the Turlock Christmas Parade
• Attendance at the Downtown Tree Lighting Ceremony
• Participation in community appearances and local events
• Assisting with fundraising efforts for future programs and parade floats
• Completion of a group community service or legacy project
• Mentoring future contestants beginning in the spring
• Assisting with and participating in the following year’s pageant, including crowning the next court

šŸ¤ A Volunteer & Community-Based Program

The Turlock Melon Carnival is built on a volunteer foundation with the goal of community enrichment.

We are committed to creating a program that reflects the heart of Turlock;
welcoming, supportive, and inclusive of all participants.

This pageant is designed to uplift, empower, and celebrate young women; not to create an environment that feels exclusive or elitist. If cost of participation creates a financial hardship, please reach out to turlockhistoricalsociety@gmail.com. With the upmost discretion we can work on finding a solution together.
